The Flip Side of Life

Have you ever asked yourself if Jesus would wear a Rolex? Ever know anyone who was killed by a coconut? If not, then take a trip to the flip side with the final cabaret of Florida Studio Theatre’s (FST) winter season!

Comedy music has always been used to reflect on life’s strangeness and contradictions, and The Flip Side does just that, featuring some of the best satiric songs from the last century. This cabaret is sure to make you laugh out loud one minute and ponder the meaning of life the next.

The Flip Side features comedic music from the 1950s to 2020 and everything in between. Travel back in time with Chad Michael Trio’s classic catchy tune “The Ballad of Sigmund Freud,” a song that cleverly questions the methods of Freud and his followers.

Hear lyrics from the brilliant mind of Shel Silverstein, originally written for musicians like Old Dogs, a supergroup in the late 1990s comprised of country music legends Waylon Jennings, Mel Tillis, Bobby Bare, and Jerry Reed.

“These fanatical maestros, hailing from backgrounds as oddly different as mismatched socks, are united in the noble pursuit of offering life advice with the finesse of a cat burglar stealing your heart,” says director Catherine Randazzo. “They've masterfully pointed out the quirks of the human condition, exposed personality foibles, and handed us the cheat codes for navigating the game of life.”

Audience members will be guided through the evening in the capable hands of a cast of stellar performers. Marcel Werder and Chris Richie will be making their FST debuts alongside Bill Selby, who has performed in FST Cabaret productions including Shakespeare’s Greatest Hits (2018) and Older Than Dirt (2017). Selby is excited to be back on the FST stage with this show.

“I've always thought of myself as someone who was just a bit off to the left; I've looked at the world with amusement. Truly, what does it all mean, in the end? These songs tell you that we must go through life with a sense of humor, otherwise things would be awfully dark, wouldn't they?” he joked.

Randazzo added that the show is unique and bizarre and mixes the mundane into something ordinary.
“Buckle up and enjoy this cabaret season’s grand finale. These wild songs and stories will leave you questioning everything, just the way we like it,” she said.
